Alonso to miss Australian Grand Prix

TWO-time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso will miss the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne after suffering concussion in a crash in testing.

"Fernando's doctors have recommended to him that, following the concussion he sustained in a testing accident at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on February 22nd, for the time being he should seek to limit as far as is possible any environmental risk factors that could potentially result in his sustaining another concussion so soon after his previous one, so as to minimise the chances of second impact syndrome, as is normal medical procedure when treating athletes after concussions," McLaren said in a statement. "In order to limit those environmental risk factors, specifically, his doctors have advised that he should not compete in the imminent Australian Grand Prix meeting, which will take place on March 13th, 14th and 15th.

"Fernando has understood and accepted that advice, and the two McLaren-Honda cars will therefore be driven in Australia by Fernando's teammate Jenson Button and the team's test and reserve driver Kevin Magnussen." The 33-year-old Spaniard crashed into a wall at the track in Barcelona when he ran wide on the final day of the second pre-season test and had to be air-lifted to hospital under sedation.

Alonso spent three nights in hospital before being released and as a result sat out the final testing session in Barcelona last week so as to rest and recuperate at home in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo.

McLaren remain hopeful that Alonso will be cleared to race in the second Grand Prix of the season in Malaysia on March 29. "Fernando's doctors acknowledge that he feels fit and well, and that he regards himself as ready to race, and, that being the case, they are comfortable with the fact that he has already recommenced physical training, with a view to preparing for a return to the cockpit of his McLaren-Honda car for the Malaysian Grand Prix meeting on March 27th, 28th and 29th," the statement continued. "Indeed, his doctors are supportive of that ambition, satisfied as they are that he sustained no damage whatsoever during his testing accident on February 22nd.

"All at McLaren-Honda fully support Fernando's decision in respect of his doctors' advice." Alonso has only just begun his second spell with the Woking-based team after an ill-fated one-season stint in 2007 when McLaren were expelled from the constructors' championship and fined a record $US100 million ($127.86 million) dollars for spying on confidential technical information from Ferrari.

On top of Alonso's crash, McLaren have endured significant reliability problems in testing with their new Honda-powered MP4-30 car.

Typo has Thurston at sixes and sevens

MICHAEL Morgan has staved off Lachlan Coote to win the Cowboys fullback spot as coach Paul Green revealed a team-sheet "typo" was behind Johnathan Thurston's shock naming at five-eighth.

Green appeared to have pulled another selection switch with Thurston when the Maroons champion was named in the No. 6 jumper for Saturday night's clash against the Roosters.

Thurston finished the second half of 2014 in the No. 7 jumper, and it appeared Green had conjured another selection surprise when he installed Robert Lui as halfback for Round 1.

But Green assured Cowboys fans Thurston would remain in the No. 7 jumper, saying he would investigate how the Test star appeared at five-eighth in an official team list sent to the NRL.

"It's a typo," Green told The Courier-Mail on Tuesday.

"I don't know who made the error and I'll be working out who made the mistake.

"But there's no tactical change, 'Johnno' will be playing in the No. 7 jumper and Robert Lui will be our five-eighth."

Green also maintained the status quo with the versatile Morgan, whose grip on the fullback spot appeared to be slipping after Lachlan Coote threw down the gauntlet in pre-season.

Returning from a knee reconstruction, Coote wore the No. 1 jumper in two trials against the Broncos and Titans and made it clear he had his heart set on claiming the fullback spot.

But Green said Morgan's outstanding form last year in the backfield was a factor in his difficult decision to leave Coote out of his 19-man squad.

"That (Morgan's efforts in 2014) certainly came into consideration but it was also Cootey's form this year," he said.

"I'm not saying Lachlan was bad, but he's only played six games in two years, he's been out for 12 months and it will take him a bit longer to get back to his best.

"In pre-season, I wanted to get some footy into him without the pressure of the NRL.

"It was a tough call, but Cootey will play a part in our season at some stage, no doubt about it."

In other selection news, Storm recruit Justin O'Neill beat Kyle Feldt to a wing spot, while at hooker Rory Kostjasyn did well to hold off Jake Granville, who will play off interchange.

Up front, Broncos import Ben Hannant has clinched a starting spot at the expense of James Tamou, who is recovering from neck surgery.

"I have the luxury of picking on form," Green said. "It's up to guys who get that chance to keep it too because they have quality players underneath them."

Eighteen months ago, the 22-year-old was warned by doctors he might never play rugby league again after a spinal operation which saw him cut adrift by the Broncos.

When Whitchurch was thrown a lifeline by Bennett at Newcastle last year, only for the Knights to renege on the deal, he was entitled to fear his NRL career had hit a dead end.

But tomorrow night, Whitchurch is the poster boy for Bennett's Broncos resurrection, ousting Kodi Nikorima for the final spot on Brisbane's interchange bench.

The 100kg powerhouse played the last of his three NRL games in 2012 and has been rewarded by Bennett for fighting back from his medical and contractual sagas.

Whitchurch's manager Sam Ayoub last night detailed the contractual spat that left the former Australian Schoolboy in limbo and considering legal action against the Knights.

"Wayne was actually keen to sign Aaron to Newcastle," Ayoub told The Courier-Mail.

"Unfortunately, there was a shameful backflip by the officials there, but thankfully Aaron has hung in there and now he has the reward he deserves.

"We'd agreed to terms. Wayne was keen on him, but when we requested the contract to sign, the Knights never sent one.

"His family wanted to seek legal action, but Aaron didn't want that. Thankfully, the planets have aligned and he has been reunited with Wayne at the Broncos."

With his speed and robust frame, Whitchurch is capable of playing wing, centre or back row. He won major credit points during the Broncos' pre-season military camp, where Bennett was impressed with Whitchurch's attitude, leadership and team-first ethos.

As a teenager, Whitchurch was one of Queensland's hottest talents, scoring the Maroons' first ever try in the maiden under-20s State of Origin clash in 2012. But shortly after, he suffered a back injury which cost him a Broncos contract and crippled his career.

"The doctors told him it was very unlikely he would ever play NRL again," Ayoub said.

"After the operation, he didn't want to risk getting injured again, he was about to get married and was going to focus on a career as a landscaper.

"But Aaron was always a committed kid and we knew he had the ability to bounce back if he was given the opportunity.

"As a junior, he was a standout. There's a saying you never forget how to ride a bike and Aaron never forgot how to play football."

Bennett backed Whitchurch to handle his Souths baptism, saying last night: "He's a great young talent, I'm really pleased for him."

Smith on the brink of a surprise return

MELBOURNE Storm skipper Cameron Smith says he will put his hand up to play in Monday night's season opener against St George Illawarra if his ankle pulls up well on Thursday.

The star hooker completed a full training session yesterday as he pushed his case for selection, just less than three months after undergoing ankle surgery.

Smith said he got through the session well, but Thursday would be the true test.

"I have a day off tomorrow (Wednesday) and I think the medical staff and (coach) Craig (Bellamy) are quite keen to see how it pulls up when I get in on Thursday, and myself too," Smith said.

"I'd like to think it'll be feeling OK, but it really comes down to what the medical staff think of the recovery of the ankle.

Smith, who was speaking at Rebel Sport for Shock Doctor yesterday to promote mouth guard awareness for kids, said he had no issue taking the goalkicking duties if he played on Monday night after taking "20 kicks" yesterday.

THE NRL and Gold Coast Titans are under mounting pressure to reinstate the five players stood down in the club's cocaine crisis after a submission was made to the code's Integrity Unit.

The move comes as it emerged the five players have been completing secret training sessions at a Burleigh gym to ensure they are ready to play if called upon.

The Titans are set to be without star trio Beau Falloon, Greg Bird and Dave Taylor for Saturday's season-opener against Wests Tigers at Cbus Super Stadium as they await court appearances over the next week.

Falloon, the Gold Coast's reigning player of the year, will appear in Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow to face four counts of supplying a dangerous drug along with utility Jamie Dowling, who has been charged with seven counts of possession and two counts of supplying.

TITANS' officials feel let down by one of their own players who knew of the investigation into alleged cocaine use one month before charges were laid.

The Courier-Mail can reveal one of the Titans players was aware of the investigation weeks before the Queensland Crime Commission laid charges.

The player sought legal advice but did not tell club officials of the possible pending crisis.

The player has told friends he was not allowed to speak about the issue but some Titans officials feel he should have informed them regardless.

Annesley, coach Neil Henry, the football department and the majority of Titans players were only informed of the charges via the media.

Some of the club's officials feel they have been left in the lurch, forced to move out of their Southport School training facilities and make policy on the run.

While one Titans player knew weeks before, the majority of the remaining five former and current Titans only received word they were implicated in the wake of Karmichael Hunt's charges.

Some of the Titans players took the field for a trial in Cairns last Saturday knowing they could be charged the following day.

Yet even then, a number of club officials remained in the dark.

The charged players are all expected to plead not guilty and are on a collision course with their club if they are suspended prior to having their day in court.

Lawyer for five of the current Titans facing supply and possession charges, Campbell MacCallum, told The Courier-Mail that legal action was an option for his clients.

It is understood Titans officials have also been made aware that legal action is an option if they suspend any of the current five players pending the outcome of the judicial process.

NRL chief Dave Smith sidestepped the issue of independently punishing Titans players and backed their right to innocence until proven otherwise.

"Like you and me they will be given due process and allowed to follow natural justice," he said.

"Once facts emerge we will decide what the appropriate course of action is.

"We can't presume guilt before players or anyone in society has had the right to a fair and natural justice."

Titans players facing charges, including Dave Taylor and Greg Bird, met with detectives on the Gold Coast again on Tuesday.

Cocaine more prevalent in Sydney: Rogers

TITANS hall of fame member Mat Rogers has rubbished the Gold Coast's reputation as a drug capital and says cocaine was "around" far more during his career in Sydney.

Rogers told The Courier-Mail that drugs were more prevalent when he was based in Sydney, playing for Cronulla and the NSW Waratahs, than they were during his four seasons at the Titans.

Rogers loves the Titans and said it was a cultural issue at the club rather than the city of Gold Coast that may be behind the Titans' cocaine allegations.

"I'll go on record as saying that I was around it, as in hearing stuff about it, more in Sydney than I was up here," Rogers said.

"It is not a Gold Coast thing, it is a culture thing.

"If you are a professional sportsman then there is a certain element of society that will get around you.

"You have to be strong and remember you are a professional athlete."

Rogers played for the Sharks from 1995 to 2001 and then the NSW Waratahs from 2002 to 2006 before becoming an inaugural Titan.

The son of league great Steve, Rogers had an outstanding career, playing 200 NRL games, eight State of Origins for Queensland and 11 Test matches.

He is gutted that the club has been put through another scandal but backed the current administration to sort the mess out.

"This is just sad. It is not looking great is it?" Rogers said.

"The club administratively is at its strongest but from a player behaviour point of view it is at its lowest.

"They can survive. In six months' time, they can be winning football again. Time heals everything.

"In the early days at the Titans we had a very strong culture within the club.

"People got comfortable. When things go wrong at the top, it filters down.

"Some players get their nose out of joint when things are wrong at the top and they think well if they are doing that then we can do this.

"Neil Henry is starting to get the culture going again though which is why I think administratively they are moving in the right direction.

"They are bearing the brunt of poor decisions last year and previous years."

The NRL has also backed the current board with chief executive Graham Annesley and the board members maintaining their positions under the new NRL ownership.

NRL chief Dave Smith also confirmed player and staff contracts would be carried over to the new entity.

Frizelle vows to help rebuild Titans

TITANS chairwoman Rebecca Frizelle has promised to deliver the Gold Coast a football club they can be proud of after the NRL delivered the gift of life on Tuesday.

Frizelle joined the Titans board in April 2014 and after 11 difficult months trying to salvage the shattered empire built by Michael Searle and kept alive by white knight Darryl Kelly, Tuesday's change of ownership to the NRL is the breakthrough she needed to get the club back on its feet. From a position of imminent death, the Titans now boast a surety to climb to a position of strength.

Frizelle promised the new regime won't repeat mistakes of the past.

"This is the turning point for the club and the Gold Coast," Frizelle told The Courier-Mail.

"The Gold Coast deserves a strong rugby league club, this is rugby league heartland. Today that has been delivered.

"Quite frankly (the club) couldn't have survived ...

"It's fair to say we've been stripped back to the bare core over the last few days and it's been a very challenging and difficult time for everyone concerned.

"But these times bring out the best in everybody including our community, our sponsors and our members. The overwhelming support we've received has just been incredible.

Frizelle paid credit to the support of the local community.

"We have a great city of people down here. When times are tough, this is when we shine," she said..

"With the CEO and the current board, we will deliver to the Gold Coast a club they can be very proud of."

Right now, that remains a key issue for the Titans. Their brand is at an all-time low.

The club must fill three major sponsorship positions on the jersey worth $1.5m, while five players are on charges for supplying cocaine and are set to face court within days of the club's first home game of 2015 next week.

The Titans had become known as the Titanics such was the tarnished nature of their brand.

But Frizelle was adamant the club would always remain Titans and would get the business sailing into smooth waters as soon as possible.

"The brand is incredibly important," she said.

"It belongs to the Gold Coast and I have absolutely and nor does the board have any interest in changing that branding.

"That is what it was founded on and will remain as the Gold Coast Titans."

More cocaine arrests in coming days

THE Gold Coast Titans were officially declared insolvent and went into administration as the Crime and Corruption Commission confirmed more sports stars could be arrested within days in connection to the cocaine crisis engulfing the club.

Six past and present Gold Coast Titans, including Greg Bird and Dave Taylor have already been charged with supplying cocaine, with the two Origin stars presenting to police to provide their fingerprints.

As revealed by The Courier-Mail on Tuesday, Smith and the NRL saved the Titans football club by becoming full owners, ending years of crippling debt, unpaid bills to local contractors and financial issues.

It was the NRL's only choice to rescue a $1bn television rights deal that demands a 16-team club competition due to start in eight days and a stadium agreement with the Queensland government.

Mr Smith conceded the club's future now hinges on whether it can restore its reputation.

Investors including Titans founder Michael Searle and white knight Darryl Kelly have lost at least $22 million in the deal, but Mr Smith attempted to paint it as an "exciting" day for fans saying the new regime would rebuild the brand, reconnect with the community and create a club to make the Gold Coast proud.

"We will make sure this is a club you can trust whether you're a sponsor, a fan or a little boy or girl watching on television you will trust this club because we're going to build a great club and we're all going to be proud of it," he said.

"I can stand here and look you in the eye and tell you the Titans have a long term future.

"I'm not pretending there's no problems, what I'm saying is there is a long term future and we stepped in, the club has a good board, good management and will now move forward."

The Titans players caught up in the scandal were last night served with notices to front the club board and provide documentation of their upcoming court cases.

It comes as the CCC confirmed more charges were likely.

"Based on current information the CCC expects any further arrests of current and former sportspeople will occur by the end of this week or early next week," it said in a statement.

After reporting to the police station, Bird spoke briefly of his heartache as he faces the possibility his NRL career is over, if found guilty.

Guilty verdicts to drug supply charges carry a four-year ban under rules from the World Anti Doping Agency.
